Where are the typonews websites?

IF you’re a typographic afficionado wondering looking for websites which provide articles and news on type design and related topics, this page is for you! Some are so crazy about typography that they read type news sites everyday, whereas others prefer to read more infrequently or only on a specific type subject. In fact, people who manage to publish these news sites are probably more crazy than us as they write their websites with great enthusiasm and dedication for generally nothing in return—or just to receive feedback from their readers! If we’ve missed any important sites, don’t hesitate to let us know.

ATypI news

Some official news from the venerable organization along with some other assorted information. See you in Copenhagen for the next annual conference…

Lines & Splines

A very fresh weblog on everything type-related. Andy Crewdson started it a few months ago to improve his knowledge of the world of typography, but the result is more than that. It’s the place where you can find the very lastest news on the web together with some old pearls. There is always some interesting info to be had. Also don’t be surprised if, from time to time, the site’s logo has changed. Merci Andy!

Upper & Lowercase

In the old days (70’s), U&lc was the house journal of ITC and was originally created by Herb Lubalin to promote the company’s typeface library. For a few decades this free journal published very good articles on graphic design and the use of typefaces. It was an excellent reference. A couple of years ago, ITC decided to make U&lc an online journal only and they continued until Agfa purchased ITC. Now, from time to time they publish a new article, but frequently revisit old material. A sad result of the global economy.

Creative Pro fonts page

The “font page” of the Creative Pro website is a good source of type news, particulary because of John D Berry’s regularly-published column (Berry was the former editor of U&lc and is a contributor to several publications, including Adobe magazine). Berry covers many topics, from traditional reviews of new typefaces to comparisons of different subway signage systems, or more personal musings on book design in the pure tradition of Tschichold. One of the best!

Textism

It may not exactly be a website on typography, but it is quite interesting. Dean Allen periodically publishs items focused on type, such as his ‘20 best text fonts,’ a web version of the excellent book on writing history by Hans E. Meyer, or a flash animation about the golden section in book design.

Microsoft/typography Links news & contacts page

This website is probably the best place to find interesting type-related news. It compliments the aforementioned Lines & Splines quite well. The site is maintained by the Microsoft Typography webmaster Simon Daniels, a graduate of University of Reading typography course.

Typographer

This is another site where you can find frequently updated type news. They sometimes also publish interviews or longer articles. Additionally, there is a link section (though it really needs to be updated!).

Travelling typographer

FontWorks has Neil MacMillan, ‘the travelling typographer,’ periodically share some his thoughts on type as it is used in the real world. His columns are brimming with news on the British type scene. We do sometimes wish that his writing was more editorially independant from the London distributor…

Type Review

Everyday news on type. With all of these type news websites, you really have a broad selection to choose from. But I do think the best ones are those which provide some opinions in addition to news. In the past, this one published some good type reviews and interviews. This is no longer the case and I wonder why?

Perrousseaux

In this official website of the Atelier Perrousseaux, the small French publisher specializing in type books, there is a section dedicated to lastest news on typography and graphic design events in France. A good site to reference before taking a trip to our country.

Les temps typographiques

IN the French scene, there are indeed fewer websites on the subject. This one stands out and is a good one. It’s a part of Planete Typographie. Each issue of this magazine focuses on one type designer—usually a French one. Christophe Loubet del Bayle, the editor and webmaster, is already working on the next issue which is due out this summer. If you want to improve your knowledge of the French scene, I recommend this site.

Originally published in 2001, in 2008 this article is already historical. How many website survived from this period? Even if we don’t refer to the design who changed dramatically, thanks to the CSS, the websites who still updated should be today considered as anscetors, such Typographer or the MS typography page to take to very different sources (a simple blog and a page from a major corporation). The place to be in 2008 is probably I Love Typography: Incredible difference at design and features level. Recall that in 2001, the blog era has just started…
