Le Monde Journal PTF

Le Monde Journal PTF (OpenType) is the typeface on which the entire Le Monde family is based. By definition, it is intended for newspaper use & at small sizes. This family was designed in 1994 as custom font for the French newspaper Le Monde. The family is not used any more by this newspaper from November 2005. Remain few use on others publications of Le Monde.

Even though it has the same colour as Times, it appears more open. The reading flow has been made more fluent & less abrupt. The glyphs counters are bigger, as if they were “alluminating the interior.” The form, characterized by its serifs, remains embedded in our visual memory.

To accommodate any problems in newspaper printing, the bold sharply contrasts with the roman. The demi weight is better suited to titling or more careful printing. Italics accompany Le Monde Journal PTF. With a more delicate design & a distinctive rhythm, they remain noticeable when used with the romans. Le Monde Journal PTF is available in three weights, each in roman, italic.

Presented to the public in 1997, ten years after, the 2007 OpenType version is the next step in the history of the Le Monde Journal. The glyph set has surpassed the usual 250 to a size of more than 700, which allows for the composition of numerous Latin-script European languages. Along with small caps available in the three weights, 4 sets of figures are provided–lining and oldstyle–in tabular and proportional widths, depending on the version. Miniscule lowercase, figures for automated fractions, are also included, and in addition a set of dingbats for everyday use in newspaper and magazine layout. The full family is composed of more than 4600 glyphs and feature around 280 000 pairs.
