OpenType support

OpenType requirements

The main interest of an OpenType font is that it is a unique file which can be used for both MacOs and Windows and offers large support of languages to Unicode-compatible applications. Non-Unicode applications (such as Quark Xpress 6) will be able to access only character set depending of your language setting from your computer. Unicode applications (such as Microsoft Office) will be able to access to all characters from the keyboard or via the glyph palette from the operating system.

Finally, easy access to special glyphs such as small caps, alternates, ligatures, fractions, etc. will be accessible on applications that support handling of OpenType features (such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark Xpress 7). OpenType features are application-dependent and may vary, as applications will not support the same features.

See Adobe readme for more info on OpenType support. For more basic info on OpenType, you can also see this section on Underware website.

Adobe PS printer driver 4.3 minimum if using 95, 98, ME.
Adobe PS printer driver 5.1.2 minimum if using NT4.

MacOs OpenType installation

Our fonts are compressed as .zip. To open them, rather to use MacOs “unziping” (who don’t support zip with passwords), you will need to use third party software like The Unarchiver, or from Smith Micro (formerly Aladdin Systems) called Stuffit Expander. Some versions of Stuffit (today Stuffit 12) will work better with your current version of MacOs. But never use Stuffit 9, who contain bugs.

If, during the download, the file loses his icon, try to open it directly from Stuffit menu instead of clicking on it. Lastly, you must provide the access codes needed to extract the PTF fonts.

Installation on MacOs 10.5
—Quit all applications before installation.
—To let all users of the computer access the fonts, use the FontBook or drag/copy the fonts into the main fonts folder (Apple references 1, 2, 3, the last two as pdf) in your Library folder at the root of the hard drive: /Library/Fonts/ (admin login required). To be the only user of that fonts, drag or copy the fonts into the local fonts folder (Apple references) in your own user Library folder: /Users//Library/Fonts/.
—On MacOs 10.3, you can alternatively use the FontBook to install your fonts, it that case, just click on the font to launch Fontbook and follow the procedure.
—With Mac Os X and its various font folders, a third party font manager can be another good choice, please to their own websites for comparisons: Font Reserve, FontAgent, Suitcase, MasterJuggler. Apple recently added some tutorials with QuickTime movies about fonts on Mac Os X.

MacOs X font cache problems
In MacOs X, certain applications, fonts are cached to speed screen display. If your fonts appear garbled or fonts won’t empty from trash, it mean you have problems with your caches. Delete /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS. You can also use Tiger cache cleaner or FontNuke. See additional infos about Font Cache at this Adobe Support page.

For Adobe applications: quit all Adobe applications, search for files beginning AdobeFnt and a lst extension, then delete all of them, and restart all your Adobe applications.

Windows OpenType installation

Click on the zip files and provide the access passwords requested to extract the PTF fonts. Perhaps, you may need a more recent version of Stuffit Expander for Windows, or Winzip.

Installation on Windows 2000, XP and Vista
—Quit all applications before installation.
—Double Click on Start menu, then, activate Control panels with the right buttom of your mouse to open the folder separately, then open Fonts folder.
—Drag the fonts from “unzipped” folder to that Fonts folder, et voilà! No information to date (January 2007) about font installation on Vista, please refer to Microsoft pages about that.

Windows screen display (limitations)
The OpenType format was invented by Adobe & Microsoft as a joint venture in 1996. Today, all fonts shipped by Adobe are in OpenType format (.otf); same for Microsoft under the name OpenType TrueType (.ttf). The OpenType format .otf (as in our fonts) work at its best under recent operating systems who feature qualitative screen rendering such Quartz (on MacOs), CoolType (on Adobe applications), ClearType (on Windows).

Qualitative screen rendering is by default under Adobe applications or on MacOs X. To activate ClearType in Windows XP right click on the desktop and select ‘Properties’, select the ‘Appearance’ tab and press the ‘Effects…’ button. Check the tick box next to the words ‘Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts’ and select ‘ClearType’ from the drop down box. Close the Effects dialog by clicking Okay and click ‘Apply’ to complete the process.

Or use this online set up. Alternative link.

Windows font cache problems
In Windows certain applications, fonts are cached to speed screen/menus display. If your fonts doesn’t appear correctly in your font menu, appear garbled or fonts won’t empty from trash, it mean you have problems with your caches. Use the command Disk Cleanup (Start/Run; type: Cleanmgr). Disk Cleanup clean up you internet cache files, temporary files, etc. You can also use a general cleaner like the free EasyCleaner.

For Adobe applications: quit all Adobe applications, search for files beginning AdobeFnt and a lst extension, then delete all of them, and restart all your Adobe applications.
